Substantial quantities of snow!
When entering an off piste area, regardless of whether you are a skier, snowboarder or mountain climber, there are ski points of advice you must follow: 1. Get weather and avalance reports 2. Before commencing an off piste decent (on a slope with more than 30% incline not controlled by the ski centre), get information from the responsible person at the ski center. 3. Observe the slope you intend to explore. Dangerous slopes are usually directed towards the N NE and have 30 to 50 degrees incline. Avoid slopes where you can see that close by other avalanches have taken place. 4. Slopes sheltered from the wind or shady slopes have greater risk with respect to avalanches. 5. When you find yourself at the highest point of the mountain where there's a thick layer of snow, avoid "riding the brows and frames". 6. At dangerous passes make sure you ski one by one. It has been snowing this morning at Parnassos, Kalavryta, Menalo, Pisoderi and Elatohori ski resorts. All other ski resorts have cloudy skies and temperatures below zero. Fresh snow: 40cm at Vasilitsa, 25-30cm at Menalo, 20cm at Karpenisi & Pisoderi and 10cm at Pertouli & Metsovo. The risk factor for avalanches is high today (for off piste skiing it is 2 points out of 5), due to south winds and a rise in the temperature, says Kostas Economou, responsible at Parnassos Ski Centre.
